چکیده

The growing threat of biological agents, new diseases, and food-borne pathogens has created an increasing need for rapid and sensitive detection before the target population becomes infected. The incident of the anthrax letters in October 2001, the emergence of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and the West Nile virus, and repeated occurrences of food-borne pathogens illustrate how necessary such detection is. Detect-to-protect or detect-to-warn operation is generally possible only with an instrument that can detect and identify the pathogens in a few minutes or less. Merely detecting the presence of biological particles (as bioparticle triggers do—see " Advanced Trigger Development " by Thomas Jeys and colleagues, page 29) is insufficient, as there are generally many kinds of benign bacteria and other organisms routinely present in the air and often in or on the water and food that we consume. Detect-to-protect operation therefore requires not only that the particles be detected but also that they be identified, all within a short time (Figure 1). Applications that could benefit from CANARY (for Cellular Analysis and Notification of Antigen Risks and Yields) technology include biological aerosol sampling , point-of-care diagnostics, pre-symptomatic diagnosis in the aftermath of a biowarfare attack, detection of agricultural pathogens at ports of entry, or screening of perishable food supplies. Such rapid diagnostic tests could be applied in a variety of settings. Medical care workers would prefer to be able to diagnose patients within a few minutes at the point of care (e.g., doctor's office, hospital bedside) rather than have to submit samples for testing at remote facilities where the results often take several days to obtain. In addition, rapid identification of plant and animal dis

Rapid Identification of Malassezia furfur from other Malassezia Species: A Major Causative Agent of Pityriasis Versicolor

The present study is designed to evaluate the application of a simple method for rapid identification of Malassezia furfur among other Malassezia spp. based on production of a brownish-red pigment and its diffusion into the medium containing L-tryptophan as a sigle source of nitrogen.  91 strains of Malassezia (20% M. furfur, 2% M. sympodialis, 5% M. obtosa and 73% M. globosa) isolated from ski...

Glucose-Sensitive Holographic (Bio)Sensors: Fundamentals and Applications

Nowadays sensors and especially biosensors play an important role in medical diagnosis and detection of food and environment contaminations. Biosensors’ facilities have been improved significantly by using technologies such as surface plasmon resonance, microfluidics, laser, and electrochemistry. These technologies are now available on chips in micro- and nano-scale and are capable of mea...

Development of Nucleic Acid Aptamer-based Sensors for the Direct Detection and Identification of Biological Agents

The objective of this work is to develop a novel sensing platform for the direct and rapid detection of biological agents. To achieve this goal, we are building on our portable DNA Biological Detection System work by incorporating a new class of molecular recognition elements, known as aptamers. In this paper, the nucleic acid-based sensor work conducted in our laboratory is discussed including...

New Methods for Identifying Microorganisms as potential bioterrorism agents with Emphasis on Chromatography-Mass Spectrophotometry (GC-MS): Narrative Review

Today, with the development of microbiology, biotechnology, and cellular and molecular genetics, human knowledge of microorganisms has increased and the possibility of making biological weapons with pervasive effects has increased. On the other hand, bioterrorist events and the construction of laboratories and sites for the production of biological weapons in many developed and developing count...

DEVELOPMENT OF A RAPID AND SENSITIVE RADIOIMMUNOASSAY FOR MEASUREMENT OF AFLATOXIN B 1 IN BIOLOGICAL SAMPLES

Aflatoxin B I (AFB) isa well known hepatocarcinogen in several animal species and probably a causative agent in human hepatocellular carcinoma. Humans are exposed to AFB by ingesting contaminated food. Aflatoxin contamination encountered in human foods is usually at low levels which is difficult to measure by chromatographic methods. Therefore in the present study we have developed an immun...
